July 2018 - 'When Harry met Meghan'
Whilst the pomp and ceremony of the Royal Wedding of the Duke & Duchess of Sussex had been long forgotten, the rescheduled WACWAC meeting to celebrate the fusion of British & American cultures took place on Friday 13th July at Chez Moi in Willoughbyy Towers..
We welcomed Ian Anderson to his first WACWAC - because you can never have enough 'Ians' in a group...
To commence proceeedings, we first sampled a bottle of The Norfolk - Parched whisky from St George's Distillery in Norfolk, England. This proved to be very popular on the night, with Alan being a strong advocate after a numer of glasses...
Next up, we opened up a bottle of Royal Lochnagar 12 yo from the distillery one mile away from the Balmoral Royal Estate. Reputed to having been Queen Victoria's favourite whisky (well if you lived only a mile from a distillery, there's a good chance that their whisky would become your favourite too!) - though its Royal Warrant lapsed 5 years after Victoria's death, it's still the whisky that our current Queen gives as a present, but branded as 'Balmoral Castle Whisky'.
Third up was an unusual American Whiskey (not a Bourbon!) - Michter's US*1 Unblended - which was excellent with its candied sweetness nose and toffee / vanilla palate. It proved to be the most popular of the three whiskies tasted on the evening..
A superb accompanying 'Transatlantic' themed fayre courtesy of Chris was then served:
English battered Haddock Goujons with Harry Ramsden's Chips
Southern Fried Chicken Goujons with American Fries
For good measure, the meeting finished up tasting two additional whiskies from Pete's private whisky cellar - these were a Laphroaig PX Cask with its pungest peaty taste sweetened by being finished off for a year in Pedro Ximinez sherry casks; and then a Dalwhinnie 15 yo from the Highlands.
A good time was had by all - and the evening was yet another excellent adventure into the ocean of the water of life!
